News and Information from Holland Homes.

Building a custom home is an exciting process. Each decision you make moves you one step closer to moving into your dream home. However, the process as a whole can be overwhelming at times. Factors such as the benefits of certain stains of wood compared with others are important to consider, yet is often an unfamiliar territory. At Holland Homes, we want to ensure that your custom building experience is as smooth as possible. Having prior knowledge allows you to have a better understanding of what your home could look like.

Our flooring list below will provide you with knowledge that can help you choose the best materials for your home:

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is more costly than carpet, but this type of flooring requires much less maintenance overall. Hardwood floors contain a layer of protective finish which makes them more stain-resistant than many of the other choices.

Hardwood floors can also be repaired or refinished. While scratches and dents may occur throughout their lifetimes, they have proven relatively simple to sand, smooth, and refinish. Typically, you will never need to replace hardwood floors. This makes them a good long-term investment for your home.

Another advantage of hardwood floors is that they are much more environmentally friendly than other flooring options. Wood floors use less water and energy to produce and are even able to be recycled. Other materials, such as carpet, typically use more synthetic materials and chemicals.

Lastly, hardwood floors will increase the value of your home. These floors never go out of style and there are so many variations to choose from. While other floorings will typically be removed when a buyer moves into a home, hardwood floors can be a reason that a home is bought.

One thing to keep in mind when looking at hardwood floors is that they are more costly than the other options. While this investment could very well pay off in the long term, make sure to check your budget to ensure that hardwood floors could be a viable choice for your home.

Vinyl Planks

Vinyl flooring is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a material that looks and feels like hardwood, but at a much lower cost. This new medium is durable, easy to install, and easy to clean, making this product a great choice for many!

Luxury vinyl plank flooring (LVP) is a cost-effective way to create a modern look without breaking your budget. Some of these LVP’s even offer waterproof and scratch-resistant options. Another great quality about LVPs is that you can recreate whatever look you would like. Whether you love the look of mahogany or natural stone, there is a variation available for all styles. At Holland Homes, we offer a wide variety of styles and shades of LVP for you to choose from!

Floor carpeting is not a new concept in the design world but with so many new materials entering the marketplace, the public is forgetting how much carpet can add to the overall look of your home. The use of carpet can immediately enhance your decor and hide imperfections in previous floor installations. If you are looking for a chic and cozy look, carpet may be a good option for you.

Carpet also provides warmth and comfort in the winter months, which is important too. Other materials can quickly become cold when the temperature outside drops but carpet offers great heat insulation for the entire household. Don’t forget, carpet is soft on your feet year-round too!

Lastly, the carpet is easy on the budget. Being much less expensive than ceramic planks or hardwood variations, carpet allows you to get the look that you want without breaking the bank.

There are, however, a couple of things to keep in mind when thinking about installing carpet as your flooring. First, carpets tend to retain stains if they are not cleaned regularly and properly. Cleaning can involve high maintenance costs, both financially and in terms of time.

Tile has been the go-to flooring option for decades. Most people are familiar with the look and feel of this style. Ceramic tiles can be a great looking and much less expensive alternative to natural stone. Floor tiles are designed to be thick and sturdy while wall tiles are thin and light so that they are easier to install.

A major pro of floor tiles is that they are easy to maintain and water-resistant. This means that any stains and spills will not be absorbed by the materials, they can simply be wiped away. These qualities make tiles extremely popular for those looking for a low maintenance alternative to other materials. Also, tiles are durable. They do not crack or scratch easily and once the installation is over, tiles can last for 20 years or longer.

A couple of things to keep in mind when thinking about tile flooring is that these tiles can be slippery and hard. This, unfortunately, is a result of having such easy to clean surfaces. Tile does not make the best material to be standing on for hours at a time nor the best material to avoid falls.
