News and Information from Holland Homes.

At Holland Homes, we’ve always known that while the furnishings and structure might make up the house, it is the history and the people inside who make that house a home. This article on Houzz, a website for homeowners and home improvement professionals, features one of our favorite renovation projects that updated this 70’s style lake cabin to a light, modern, and functional space for a close-knit family to enjoy.

The Wilson Family bought land on Lake Martin, and built a house for the whole family to enjoy with elements of that classic 70’s style around every corner, from fake wood panelling, to shag carpets, to popcorn ceilings. As the family grew, the siblings who had grown up with fond memories from the lake decided it was time to give their beloved lake cabin a much needed face lift so that their own kids could enjoy this space just as much as they had.

Plans were drawn, and Holland Homes took on the extension and renovation project, transforming every inch of this house. This growing family knew that some more space was necessary, but didn’t want their home to become an uncharacteristic mansion, not suited to the area. Through careful planning, the home maintained its quaint, cabin style charm even with the extension.

In fact, the renovation as a whole was able to transform the space while staying reminiscent of the old style, with elements such as a dark green barn door that covers the pantry and perfectly matches the original dark green siding on the home’s exterior.

One of the biggest changes was the way the space was laid out in order to increase functionality. While the home had great bones, the space was strangely oriented in true 70’s style, with very little flow from room to room. The renovation was able to create an open floor plan, reorganizing the space entirely.

The family has already been able to enjoy several weekends in their revamped home, which now sleeps everyone comfortably with a spacious feel, and finished basement turned bunk-room.
