Remodeling a home can be as simple as updating your bathroom
cabinets with a fresh coat of paint, to something far more complex like renovating your entire kitchen. Although every project has its own specific elements, there are similarities in the remodeling process as a whole. These similarities make for a basic checklist that all homeowners can use during the remodeling process.
Almost every homeowner has ideas for what they want in their new or current home - maybe it’s expanding the kitchen
so there is more room to cook for family and friends, or maybe it’s remodeling the bathroom
so you can enjoy a hot bath at the end of a long day. Whatever it may be, you need to prioritize what can be done while adhering to your budget. The best way to do this is with a list. Lists are an essential part of the remodeling process and allow the homeowner to decide whether they must include a specific thing, or whether something is not essential at the current time. Be as specific as possible by listing your preferences for brands and timing for your projects so you and your contractor
are on the same page.
Permissions and Permits
Depending on the size of the project, the construction involved with remodeling may require a permit. Small interior projects usually do not require a permit, but if you are having the exterior of your house remodeled you should look into the required permits that are necessary for your project. Additions to a house require a permit as well from a local housing authority, and in order to get that, detailed architectural plans must be submitted. Any homeowners association in the neighborhood should be kept in the loop as well. An HOA can insist upon specific exterior design elements, such as using only masonry siding, maintaining a certain pitch on the roof, etc.
Finding the Right Contractor
The relationship between a homeowner and their contractor
is very important. Remodeling a home can be a stressful time, but with the right company you can get through it smoothly. Be sure to check references by asking the contractor
to give you the names of three clients they have worked with thus far. Speaking to these clients can give you either peace of mind that the contractor
is right for you, or make it clear that you need to keep looking. Here, at Holland Homes, we pride ourselves on the long-lasting relationships that we build with our clients. We know that a home is a safe haven for many families and we want to secure your confidence and trust throughout the course of bringing your new home dreams to life.
Determine Your Budget
Be sure that you know your finances. You can’t predict the future, but you do know how much you have to spend at the moment. First, determine a comfortable amount that you are willing to spend on your remodel, then use your “must have” list to get an estimate on the project. Once you have a base to work with, determine what costs will actually work within your budget. You should tell your contractor
your budget goals and see what adjustments you can make without sacrificing quality or your priorities.
Create the Schedule
Remodeling, depending on the size of the project, can take just a few weeks or many months. You need to plan accordingly, for example, if the remodel
will require your home to be open for extended periods of time, winter may not be the best time to schedule your project. It may help to plan out the times you will need to be in or out of your home. This is incase your contractor
needs you present for certain projects, or incase it is unsafe for you to be on the property at certain times. Be sure to plan ahead as much as possible to avoid any hold-ups in the schedule.
This checklist should give you a basic understanding of where and how to start your future remodeling project.
